Bible Answer

What does amen mean?

Is there special significance to the word "amen"?

The Hebrew word "Amen" (אָמֵן) is derived from the root אָמַן (’aman), which means "to confirm," "support," or "be faithful." This root conveys a sense of reliability, truth, and steadfastness. In biblical and religious contexts, "Amen" is used to affirm statements, prayers, or blessings, signifying agreement and trust in what has been said. It carries the meaning of "so be it," "truly," or "it is true," emphasizing the speaker’s faith in the validity of the statement.

In both Jewish and Christian traditions, "Amen" serves as a powerful declaration of belief, often concluding prayers as a way of affirming divine truth and commitment as seen throughout scripture:

REV. 1:7 Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven.
    And everyone will see him—
    even those who pierced him.
And all the nations of the world
    will mourn for him.
Yes! Amen!
REV. 7:11 And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living beings. And they fell before the throne with their faces to the ground and worshiped God.
REV. 7:12 They sang,
“Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom
    and thanksgiving and honor
and power and strength belong to our God
    forever and ever! Amen.”

Moreover, this is not a gendered term, and as such should not be replaced with variations like "awomen".
