Theological Test - Question 3

We posted the questions from a recent Ligonier theological test survey, and now we want to answer the questions to see how our readers answered.  We also show the results Ligonier found in their survey.

The third question was “Salvation or eternal life comes through faith alone.”  The right answer is that this is true, so Christians should answer “strongly agree”.

This is closely related to Question 2, which dealt with faith vs. works.  Remember, when Christians say salvation comes by faith alone, they do not mean faith saves them.  Rather, faith is the instrument by which God gives us eternal life, which is found in Christ Jesus alone.  In other words, faith always has an object, and that object is Christ Jesus.  He alone is our salvation and eternal life.  We have an article that explains in detail, from Scripture, why a person is saved by faith alone in Christ alone, and never by one’s works.

So, how did others answer this very important doctrine?  According to Ligonier, the general survey results are as follows:

Strongly Agree:  52%

Somewhat Agree:  13%

Don’t know:  10%

Somewhat Disagree:  7%

Strongly Disagree:  17%

As expected, Ligonier listeners did much better:

Strongly Agree:  92%

Somewhat Agree:  2%

Don’t know:  < 1%

Somewhat Disagree:  < 1 %

Strongly Disagree:  4%

Let us know how you did!
