The best way to build a basic understanding of the Bible is to study it in a systematic fashion. Systematic theology is a method of cataloging the Bible’s teaching to allow for easier study.
Systematic theology takes the truth found in every book of the Bible and creates a taxonomy according to the divisions of theology. For example::
Christology - study of Christ
Soteriology - study of salvation
Eschatology - study of end times
Hamartiology - study of sin
Etc...
