How did John the Baptist get his name?

How did John the Baptist get his name?

The Greek word Baptista, means "to dip," and is translated in the English vernacular as Baptist or Baptizer.

John was simply called John the Baptist or John the Baptizer because the Bible records that he baptized many people, as a calling from God. In fact, he was the originator of water baptism for repentance.
