Brian SmithWe posted the questions from a recent Ligonier theological test survey, and now we want to answer the questions to see how our readers answered. We also show the results Ligonier found in their survey.
The seventh question was “There are absolute truths.” The right answer is that this is true, so Christians should answer “strongly agree”.
Once again, the answers were relatively widely dispersed. Interestingly, 61% strongly agreed with this, while 74% strongly agreed that Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life/salvation. Yet, both are absolute truth statements! Clearly, there’s some confusion among those who were surveyed.
As for absolute truths, it’s absolutely true (pun intended). God is not a relative God. What He says is true, everything He says. There is no relativism in Christianity. Don’t get me wrong; that doesn’t mean we know everything perfectly, because we don’t. But, the fundamental truths of Christianity are absolute. For example, Scripture describes only two kinds of people: believers and unbelievers. Both have a relationship with God. One will receive eternal life, the other God’s wrath. People like to quote John 3:16, as well they should. However, almost no one ever quotes John 3:18, “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
The general survey answers were as follows:
Strongly Agree: 61%
Somewhat Agree: 17%
Don’t know: 14%
Somewhat Disagree: 3%
Strongly Disagree: 5%
As always, Ligonier listeners did much better:
Strongly Agree: 97%
Somewhat Agree: < 1%
Don’t know: < 1%
Somewhat Disagree: 0%
Strongly Disagree: 2%
We hope this survey has been informative. We’d love to know how you did!
